Although it is not considered as good as the original restaurant, it is nonethess one of the finest and most authentic restaurants serving Mughlai cuisine in South Delhi. The branch at Nizammudin is nestled away in the sprawling alleyways of the area surrounding the shrine of Hazrat Nizamuddin Aulia, where there is a distinct sense of the 'old world' and a vibrance and charm amidst a fair share of depression and poverty. As it is a fairly conservative Muslim area it would not be unwise to dress with an eye for moderation. The restaurant itself is obviously strong on food as the decor and luxurious surroundings are clearly not their speciality. The interiors are tacky as is the furniture, but don't lose sight of what brought you here...... food, and in this you will not be disappointed. Karim's excells at superb Barbeque fare, including meltingly delicious Seekh Kabaabs and their particular speciality, Mutton Burra Kabaabs, which are a must try for Shaukeens (lovers!) of meat. The chicken kabaabs are also very good although they are not as spectacular as the mutton ones. The Mughlai dishes on the main menu are rich and subtle in flavour, though they can be quite heavy to digest. The Badshahi Badam Pasanda is truly a dish for Kings and the Jahangiri Korma is also rather delectable as are most other items on the menu. The Baqar Khani Kulcha, a slightly sweetened heavy bread, traditionally eaten with Kormas on festive occasions, is worth a try for its unique taste. The service is certainly not of the five star hotel English variety but is nonetheless usually efficient and the waiters are polite and friendly. All in all, a meal at Karim's is a pleasurable experience. Meal for two Rs 450-500. Mondays closed,
opening hours 12 noon to 3.30 pm and 6 - 11.30. No Alcohol served or
permitted on the premises. |
