If any food typifies England it's the fish and chip shop and my earliest memory of this quaint fish and chips joint are the queues that would snake onto the pavement. Nevertheless, the fish was good enough for us to occasionally trudge all the way from Wimbledon to the other end of London to dine at Seashell.

On other occasions as the shop is just round the corner from the Lord's Cricket Ground, fish could be purchased to round off a satisfying evening usually having watched England been pummeled by the opposing team.

The fish, which is apparently handpicked from Dover every morning by the owner, use to be simple fare until haddock and skate as well as scampi (and a few others) were added to the menu. However, the cod and plaice (£3 and £3.50) remain the best buys especially if you want a quick take away. Deep fried in batter and served with large cut chips doused with vinegar this is a cheap and tasty meal. Sadly you'll have to pay separately for the creamy tartar sauce that use to be complimentary. In keeping with the 'British' flavour of the restaurant you can also pick up mushy peas as a side order.

It's not a connoisseurs restaurant but more the local working person's value for money tasty meal. There is little in terms of décor but for an outlet that has concentrated on take away for volume of sales there is little need for beautification of the premises.

Service is friendly and quick and while there are an increasing number of people who claim that Seashell is living off its reputation, it remains a good, cheap and quick meal. I would recommend a take away rather than using the sit down area simply because Seashell's strength has always been its simple take away meals.

Zagat's Food Rating - 17 out of a maximum of 30 - good to very good Zagat's Décor Rating - 9 out of a maximum of 30 - poor to fair
