Masterpiece of British humour is reminiscent of This Is Spinal Tap for its subtle brilliance. Withnail and I, set in the late 60's focuses on two down and out, jobless actors barely existing in the very bleakest of winters in some crumbling pit in Camden, North London. Their desperate condition forces them to flee to the country where dear old cousin Monty awaits, with his mouth-watering meat dishes and an insatiable appetite for young men. This is Monty who used to "weep at Butcher's shops as a child" as he couldn't eat the stuff then and there in a raw state!
The acerbic, subtle humour is a joy to behold, the entire film a sheer delight. Wonderful performances all around but an especially sensational one by Richard E. Grant as Withnail and a fantastic cameo by Ralph Brown as Danny, the typical 60's "intellectual". One of the truly great British films and one of the best films of the entire 80's.
