One of the classic modern horror films - absolutely devoid of blood or overt violence, though about as terrifying as a film can be. It is quite brilliantly directed from a novel "the Golden Egg" by George Sluizer who later went on to direct a dreadful, compromised remake for Hollywood. The film is about a man whose life is turned upside down by the disappearance of his girlfriend at an anonymous gas station along the motorway between France and Holland. Curiosity drives Rex nearly mad as he fails to find any answers as to what may have happened to Saskia who seems to have vanished into this air. Gradually he is drawn into a quagmire, led on by a man who promises in all sincerity to reveal everything about what happened to Saskia. The character of Rex as well as the audience become completely captive to their burning curiosity, we are drawn further and further into the dark mystery which subsequently concludes with one of the most literally heart stopping finales in movie history. The films ability to terrify is in it's depiction of lurking madness, how the most seemingly normal, intelligent people sometimes hide the most devastating kinks of personality. This is an extraordinary film, worthy of Hitchcock at his best - a masterpiece of a psychological horror film. One of the best horror movies ever. Memorable.
