We have to thank Elite Entertainment for releasing a beautifully restored digitally transferred print of the 1971 Spanish horror classic, Tombs of the Blind Dead. If it hadn't been for the fact that Elite is run by a couple of true horror aficionado's this gem would have almost certainly been lost to cinema buffs.

The plot is simple, in the 13th century a Templar cult tortured and murdered many women in the belief that they could achieve immortality. After a revolt from the townspeople, the marauding Templar Knights were executed and their corpses left hanging for the crows to peck out their eyes!

Centuries later legend has it that the dead Templar Knights return to their grounds, hunting their victims only by sound (having lost their eyes to the crows) !

This film has a very European feel to it and is a marvelous throwback to the glory days of Hammer when Terence Fisher was at the helm.

It is immersed in a sinister eeriness from beginning to end, and the music score by Anton Garcia Gabril is chillingly malevolent and haunting. It is also quite evident that Jerry Goldsmith who won an Academy Award for his great score for The Omen, has Tombs of The Blind Dead to thank as inspiration.

The Templar Knights are a cross between mummies, zombies and vampires and certainly as repulsive as any of these. This is a truly epic horror film, dripping with a chilling atmosphere with an amazing weird, bizarre soundtrack. A absolute must for fans of the horror genre.
