Absolutely essential viewing for fans of influential cinema and especially for those interested in the macabre, as this particular film is a towering masterpiece. The very first scene is so unflinchingly "in your face" as is the rest of the movie. It is so relentless that it comes as an enormous relief when it reaches its memorable climax. The movie follows the misfortunes of a group of cross country travellers who decide to take a break at the wrong place. The horrors mount as we meet the demented inhabitants of the area and of the adjacent slaughterhouse where the meat has a distinctly strange flavour. A relentless nightmarish game of survival begins with no end in sight.
Great direction by Tobe Hooper makes the viewer squirm in discomfort yet there is no reliance on gore. Contains one of the most memorable chase scenes ever! Unrelenting horror. Simply unmissable.
