This superior slasher film took the premise of Hitchcock's Shadow of a Doubt in which serial killer Joseph Cotton was preying on unsuspecting spinsters and cashing in on their money. This time the killer is not after any financial rewards - he is just a whacked out psycho trying to build himself what he perceives as the perfect family. He assumes a fake identity and moves in on a recently divorced woman with perfectly good intentions until the wheels start falling off his plan.
It's a cheap production but the director handles the subject well and is able to inject a decent amount of tension and scares along the way. O'Quinn does a fine job as the manic Step father who will kill to create his perfect home. It's unexpectedly good and maintains a decent grip throughout. There is enough suspense and tension to keep the viewer dangling in there and maintaining interest. One of the better chillers of the 80's.
