There are quite a few of us around who still like being scared out of our skins. Most of the horror movies made in the last decade have failed to do that. So when an intelligent 'chiller' comes along its something to relish.

Set in a suitably grim anonymous US city, a serial killer is busy slaying his victims according to the seven deadly sins: gluttony, greed, sloth, pride, etc., leaving a procession of corpses in his wake. Assigned to the case are veteran cop William Somerset (the highly impressive Freeman), a world weary thinker a week away from retirement and his new partner, the hot headed young David Mills (Hollywood's hottest star, Pitt) recently relocated with his wife to this hellish city and eager to make a name for himself.

Ever had one of those days you just wanna stay in bed??

Try as they might the two cops are always one step behind the killer, outwitted ultimately to horrifying effect. Despite its gruesome nature Seven isn't a gory film. Like the best horrors/thrillers Seven never shows its victims being killed on screen. Instead it relies on the far more effective technique of letting the viewer visualize the full extent of the killers atrocities when they are discussed, matter of factly, by Pitt and Freeman.

Caution! Right from the eerie title sequence this film is not pleasant viewing. Its an extraordinarily dark, bleak, atmospheric film oozing menace.
