It is some years since the trauma of the events depicted in Scream 2. Sidney has become a recluse living away from prying eyes (and in particular from the killer that never leaves her in peace(s)) in an unknown location.
In Hollywood, Stab 3 - The Return to Woodbro - the movie recreating the events that unfolded in Scream 3 is being shot. But someone is taking their love for horror movies too far again - the actors are being picked off in the same sequence that they died in 'real' life and by seemingly the same killer. Our intrepid killer also finds Sidney's hideout drawing her back to try and stop the madman once and for all. In a reunion of sorts she is joined by the ever-loving Stewie (Arquette) and the ambitious, good at heart Gale Weathers (Cox). While Scream gave horror films a new direction - reintroducing the teens in peril theme in a fresh manner - Scream 3 has little of the wit, genre-parody and novelty of its predecessor. In its place are a series of episodic set pieces loosely connected together. The shocks are predictable and forced and there is little sustained tension. The actors walk through their familiar parts and have little scope to bring in anything new. There are several red herrings along the way as the viewer tries to guess who the killer is. It could be anyone of a handful of suspects but if you watch carefully there are a few interesting in-movie hints. The Scream series has run its course and needs to rest in peace. It was fun while it lasted but Wes Craven appears to have reached his creative limit as far as the Scream concept is concerned and rather than churning out sequels of decreasing quality it would be better to move to something new.
