Aimed squarely at the MTV market this film attempts to recreate the situations and top the bawdy gross-out humour of the previous years hit teen film American Pie but lacks all the freshness and spontaneity that made Pie click. Road Trip is a blatant attempt to cash in on the toilet humour bandwagon popularized by Austin Powers 2, Something About Mary and American Pie but it plays like a generic best-of clips from the abovementioned without ever being particularly amusing on its own strength. The transformation of the shit-sandwich eating nerd/geek into a drug taking, six pack sucking, party animal is particularly painful to view yet utterly predictable and quite the norm. Another problem is that none of the main characters are particularly appealing people with the blonde romantic interest behaving more like a seasoned prostitute rather than the college freshmen that she is supposed to depict. Perhaps that too is an unfortunate par for the course. The movie involves goofy Breckin Meyer trying to intercept a naughty home video oh his before it reaches his girlfriend, and therefore the road trip. Tom Green, the MTV star is perversely amusing at times and by far the best laugh of the movie involves his intimate moments with his friends pet python. It certainly could have been worse and there are some genuinely funny moments, but on the whole it's just a wee past its due date.
