During a routine drive to his laboratory, Professor Quatermass discovers a mysterious government facility. On further investigation, he discovers a concentration of meteors around the facility. To his horror, Quatermass confronts the shocking conclusion that virtually the whole of Britain has been taken over by alien invaders who are now busy wiping out the few remaining human survivors while ensuring their own future inhabitation of the planet.
Along the same lines as Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Quatermass 2 is another example of Hammer's lesser known but well made earlier films. Excellently written by the creator of the Quatermass TV Series, Phil Kneale and director Val Guest, Qautermass 2 maintains an uneasy and tense atmosphere throughout. The impending sense of doom and the increasing panic as the surviving humans discover the extent of the alien takeover is brilliantly brought to its apocalyptic conclusion. An intelligent, gloomy and atmospheric film, Quatermass 2 is an unheralded Sci fi classic.
