Brilliant, genuinely terrifying for the first half or so before it starts to run out of steam and adopt sickly crowd-pleasing tactics. The first half of the film charts the spread of a devastating strain of Ebola, which is being carried by a tiny monkey, which was smuggled over, to the US from Africa. The director, Wolfgang Petersen, handles the scenes where the virus is spreading like wildfire very well indeed. The sense of spiralling, uncontrollable terror and sense of fear is excellent cinema. The acting is decent with Renee Russo and Kevin Spacey taking the honours. Dustin Hoffman and Cuba Gooding Jr are increasingly irritating, as they take to their buddy act with relish - most unfortunate. Donald Sutherland does his job with customary aplomb - he has become such an enjoyable "bad guy" of late. On the whole a thoroughly enjoyable action thriller - a superior form of Hollywood big budget entertainer, which unfortunately didn't do as well as expected at the Box Office. ...... |
