Three convicts break out of jail in search of treasure that one of them has hidden away. With the cops on their trail, the three run into all sorts of trials and tribulations including a run in with the Ku Klux Klan, an encounter with three sirens and a corrupt politician and a meeting with America's most wanted gangster.
En route they also cut a music record. After the brilliant Fargo, the Coen brothers have returned with another winner. The film, like all their previous efforts, has the unmistakable film noirish stamp to it - except that O Brother is a comedy! Nevertheless, it's unlike any film that you are likely to see these days - a combination of Depression era, semi-musical, road comedy. The film is beautifully shot in a manner that brings out the wonderfully saturated yellows of the Deep South of America. There is also a wonderful smattering of blues and gospel music. It all adds up to produce a marvellously atmospheric movie. O Brother is further helped by some spot on performances. George Clooney is perfectly cast as the smooth talking charmer leading the trio of jail breakers. Turturro and Tim Blake Nelson provide excellent support as Clooney's side kicks. All three are helped by a script that contains some of the wittiest lines for some time. But beware, its not an in your face laugh a minute film and as such may not be everyone's cup of tea. Its much more subtle and understated relying on its clever script and the timing and inter-play between the three leads. All in all a refreshingly good film with peppy performances and a climax that will have you chuckling with that feeling of having seen a really good film.
