Notorious was made in 1946 and is one of Hitchcock's earliest films made after he had moved to Hollywood. It is a beautifully constructed thriller, evoking the era of German spies and counter espionage, romance and betrayal played out against the gorgeous landscape of Rio-de-Janeiro. Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman are perfectly cast in the main roles as is Claude Rains as the fall-guy. Notorious, like "The Birds" was ahead of its times because the German spies are after uranium. In fact, the CIA was activated before the film was released to check if Hitchcock had, somehow, gained the secret of the atomic bomb that was dropped on Hiroshima a year later. Notorious is regarded by many film critics as one of Hitchcock's most complete films. It's most memorable shot is a pan of the camera which begins at the top of a staircase and moves down the steps to a throng at a house party to hone in on a key to the cellar that lngrid Bergman holds in her fist. It is superb use of camera that made Hitchcock the master of taking the audience with him in a purely cinematic development of the story.
