The film charts the growing relationship between two neighbours who come to realise that their respective spouses are having an affair with one another.

Set in Hong Kong's tenements in 1963, In The Mood For Love is director Wong-Kar Wai's stunning interpretation of An Affair To Remember. The film meanders on at a leisurely pace but rather than a set back this simply allows the viewer to sit back and savour it. The film has no widescreen 'scenery' shots and yet the overall effect is of a beautifully shot film. The answer lies in the simplicity of camera work and shot framing using in particular the tenement area - the flats cramped interiors, stairs and passages - to great effect.

There is also use of vivid colours intermingling with simpler backgrounds. Everything about the film is exquisitely crafted. Director Wong-Kar Wai builds the romance up deftly - never rushing the films narrative but simply allowing it to flower ever so slowly. Both leads are superbly played by the elegant Maggie Cheung and the endearing Tony Leung.

The films ultimate success lies in Wong-Kar Wai's ability to transfer the simmering feelings on screen so effectively to his audience. So the sense of unrequited love, loss and rueful recollection are not only what the viewer sees on screen but what he almost participates in. By the end you are willing the two leads to come together. In The Mood for Love is a superbly crafted film - well acted, deftly directed and with a stunning Brazilian soundtrack that will put absolutely anyone in the mood for love!

In The Mood for Love won Best Actor and Best Cinematography and Editing at the Cannes Festival 2000
