50's remake of classic Mystery of the Wax Museum is an all colour affair originally shot in 3D for release in theatres --it was a screaming success when released and still ranks amongst the hugest of Hollywood money earners. It also managed to typecast Vincent Price forever in the mould of smooth villainy. The film is set at the turn of the century (20th that is) in fog lit New York City. There is a hair-raising chase scene as the hideous caped monstrosity stalks our innocent heroine through the gaslit, misty streets. Price, as ever, does a splendid job and the production values are also suitably lavish. May not quite have the impact of sheer horror that the original clearly packed, but this still manages to enthrall and entertain largely due to Vincent Price's masterly performance. |
