If ever
there was a more shameless rip off of Halloween - we would
like to know, because in this particular movie, even John Carpenter's
tinkling, choppy keyboard theme has been lifted virtually note for
note!
The plot revolves around a jilted psycho who is venting his frustration by slicing up all the brides to be within the community - clearly rejection didn't agree with our killer. The film plays like an amateurish attempt at trying to recreate the magical style of Halloween and proceeds to make this attempt with the heaviest of hands. Instead of grace and artistry you have plodding, dull, staleness. Proceedings are so obvious and predictable and the characters reek of stereotripe! The film is totally bereft of even the slightest imagination or creative style or technique. The shocks though plentiful are utterly contrived and telegraphed by the atrocious acting and that derivative score which serves as forewarning. The only thing to its credit is that despite being a blatant and utterly shameless rip off and devoid of any semblance of originality - it somehow manages to avoid being a total bore! You can marvel at the gall of the producers who could well have been sued - at least for the dire soundtrack. What the film will be forever remembered for is that was the debut featured Tom Hanks who went on to an enormously successful Hollywood career. The film remains essential viewing for scholars of the 80's slasher genre of which it is a perfect example.
