David Cronenberg's masterpiece is one of the most memorable tragedies of the modern era. So much more relevant in an age when young people are dying in their scores of AIDS, The Fly is as poignant a love story as one can recall.
Seth Brundle's supremely confident, even cocky genius of a scientist invents a device that is set to revolutionize the world of transport and travel. His world is devastated and brought crumbling down around him with horrifying consequences. Brundle's struggle for a little dignity and honour before the end are heart wrenching scenes and brilliant cinema. A triumph not only for director Cronenberg, but also for the stars Geena Davis and Jeff Goldblum, both of whom are excellent - credit also to the quite extraordinary special effects and make up team who have done a fantastic job of transforming Seth from man to arachnid. One of the most sensitive and intelligent horror films for ages - an outstanding achievement by one of horrors great directors. We consider it one of the great horror movies of the 80's if not ever. An unqualified masterpiece.
