Sam Raimi follows up one of the nastiest shockers of the modern era with a sublime fusion of outrageous slapstick and Harryhausen on an acid trip merged with lashings of his own brand of horror on overdrive. The result is a delirious cocktail of whacked out campy horror the likes of which have never yet been encountered. Every aspect of this movie is totally insane but it works quite breathtakingly and leaves the viewer breathless and sweating and almost exhausted from the topsy turvy schizo-roller coaster ride that Raimi provides. It's a horror farce par excellence, wickedly funny and full of crackling humour and demonic energy. T his movie clearly illustrates Raimi's unquestionable genius which is being subsequently squandered with pap like the crud he just turned out with Kevin Costner. Even geniuses have to earn a living, alas. Evil Dead 2 takes off from where the first left off with cursed Ash retelling his tale of woe to a new unsuspecting girlfriend. Bridget Fonda makes an unbilled appearance as an ex. For some inexplicable reason Ash appears to be heading back towards the same cabin from where those bloodlusting kandarian demons had been unleashed by the recitation of the necronomicon. This is the superb middle instalment of what is one of the greatest of movie trilogy's in the history of cinema Godfather included. Raimi's exotic, twisted and joyously crazed vision of horror gone haywire is stunningly told through the three Evil Dead films. Each of them different from each other and yet each of them remaining masterpieces within their own sub-genre. Raimi will forever have a place in the horror hall of fame for his fabulous Evil Dead trilogy. Dead by Dawn is sublimely ridiculous and murderously funny as well bloodcurdlingly horrific (well, almost). Raimi had a decent budget to play with for the first time and the production values and make up effects are a far cry from the amateurish yet effective stuff from Evil Dead. This time the nasties look meaner and more bloodthirsty than ever before and aunt what's her face in the cellar is quite a breathtakingly voluptuous beauty, absolutely heaven sent. Its diabolical, sinfully demented brilliance. Raimi hits the ultimate cool with this and the just as epic Army Of Darkness… Dead Groovy!
