Spielberg's debut is considered by many to be his best work. A taut, brilliantly constructed cat and mouse game of a thriller. The director clearly announced his considerable talent for visual storytelling with this excellent made for TV thriller.
Dennis Weaver, so irritating as that idiotic horseriding detective is wonderful as a hen pecked, loser of a moron who somehow comes to grips with his destiny along the terrifying journey. Its a truly wonderful film and bereft of any of the sap that Spielberg's later work has become synonymous with. Excellent, taut thriller, quite expertly directed. The story is as simple as could be....a meek, irritated salesman has the usual scrap along the highway with a gargantuan oil tanker of a truck who responds by unleashing one hell of a psychotic response. This is a classic thriller, the best of the "killer auto" brigade by a long shot.
