Five strangers in a train compartment are joined on their journey by a sinister sixth companion - Dr. Schrek (Cushing) master of the occult and tarot card specialist. What unfolds are the individual destinies of the travelers as revealed by Schrek. As with most 'episodic' films, Dr. Terror suffers from unevenness. Nevertheless, the werewolf, vampire and hand stories are eerie. The man-eating plant entertains. The weak link is the feeble voodoo chapter. However, the individual stories are well bound together into the taut finale. Cushing is again flawless and is well supported by Christopher Lee and a young Donald Sutherland. The film is directed by Hammer regular Freddie Francis but is not in fact a Hammer film and is released by Amicus.
