A sort of hybrid of Titanic and Alien this is flashy if nonsensical stuff. Entertaining rubbish, something this director is earning himself a name for. The CGI monster is at least as impressive/unimpressive as those delightful anaconda's were.

Our motley crew of sea faring bandido's are represented by all the American minorities. You have the oriental or two, you have the smart talking fly Afro-American guy, you have the burnout and there is an Hispanic and a Germanic type just to cover all types.

The film moves along at more then a canter with a steady stream of corny one liners designed to keep the less discerning amused. The best thing about the movie is that it doesn't waste any time taking itself seriously and therefore works as a good hokey monster movie.

The acting is all of a rather tongue in cheek variety with veteran Treat Williams leading the way, ably assisted by Famke Jansen. The only major irritation is the actor who was equally irritating in Stephen Summers 1999 smash The Mummy as the pipsqueakish Benny. The others are all tolerable. The special effects are reasonable for a film of modest budget.
