Lionel Barrymore stars in this creepy little chiller about an escaped convict with an axe to grind coming across some very strange and handy miniature dolls. Handy as he eventually uses these inanimate objects as instruments of gruesome revenge.Very well directed and acted with admirable special effects for the era.
It comes as no surprise that this chilling little classic of the macabre is directed by one of the unherlded masters of horror, Tod Browning. He was also responsible for the original Dracula as well as one of the all time greats, Freaks. Barrymore does a splendid job, delicioulsy camp and yet so sinister as the "harmless" old doll maker. Rafaella Ottiano is reminiscent of the great Dr. Praetorious, wonderfullly OTT in her devotion to her mad cause - as all mad scientist types ought to be after all. Devil Doll is a minor masterpiece deserving immediate release on DVD!
