Brilliant Coppola thriller, one of the finest films of the 70's - truly frightening in parts. Set in the murky world of surveillance and snooping. The film breeds on paranoia as Gene Hackman plays Harry Caull, a brilliant "bugger" who gets inexorably caught up in one of his snooping cases. The deeper he gets the more horrifying a quagmire he get stuck in. Eventually the tables are turned and the hunter becomes one of the hunted. Copolla directs with a masters assurance, never letting the tension flag and stunning the viewer with a couple of devastating shockers as Hackman makes a grim discovery or two. Gene Hackman turns in another brilliant performance marking him as one of the finest and most versatile actors of his time bar none. |
