Brilliantly acted by Sissy Spacek in the title role - but the real credit lies with Brian de Palma for creating a wonderfully gothic and stylish piece of gothic guignol. Pino Donaggio's score evokes memories of Bernard Herrman at his best as De Palma turns on the style and suspense building quite breathtakingly. A modern horror classic without doubt. Piper Laurie is great as Carrie's mad, babbling religious fanatic of a mother and PJ Soles and Nancy Allen are wonderfully wicked. Watch out too for John Travolta as the amorous duffer. De Palma borrows
from Hitchcock's artistry with the camera liberally and it works!
The famous bucket scene has been scowled at by some critics as being
way too overdone, yet for us it is one of the most brilliantly knife
edged suspense scenes in film history - a memorable scene if ever
there was one. Carrie is also credited for being the first film
with a "shocker" of an ending.
