The plot – if you can call it that – is similar to the first Mission Impossible film. Two encrypted rings when put together reveal the names and addresses of every person enrolled in the Witness Protection Program – one of these turns out to be Drew Barrymore’s Angel – Dylan – known earlier as Helen Zas! We also have thrown into the wisp of a plot – Dylan’s ex-flame turned bad boy and Demi Moore’s fallen angel. But really the plot is just an excuse for a series of action sequences interspersed with ridiculous comedy. And yet where the film works is through its commitment at never taking itself in the least bit seriously. Director, McG also makes full use of his leading ladies using their charisma and physical presence to the hilt. There is nothing subtle about it but Barrymore, Diaz and Liu play to the outrageous, over the top nature of the film and that is Full throttle’s strong point. Diaz as the ditzy Angel steals the show looking equally great on the dance floor, on the beach and while going head on against Demi Moore…and if I had any doubt about my favourite Angel, Natalie’s penchant for Spider-Man underwear decides it once and for all. Demi Moore looking ridiculously sculpted in her bikini is a worthy opponent but surprisingly actually has a fairly small role. There is also a welcome appearance by John Cleese as Alex’s (Liu) father but Bill Murray is sorely missed. Full Throttle
is never boring, frequently funny and in the end completely forgettable.
An ideal film for the MTV generation.
