A group of terrorists hijack a military consignment thinking that it contains uranium. Little do they know that they have in fact intercepted a cargo much deadlier - a level 4, top secret military research project involving genetically resurrected and enhanced velociraptors and a T-Rex. Now they are loose in an abandoned warehouse and only Colonel Rance and his elite squad of special forces can take them out. On top of that, they have to be fast because the dinosaurs are breeding.

It's a simple premise but for what its worth it works quite well. There are plenty of dinosaur point of view shots - much easier than showing the dinosaurs attacking. Just as well because when you do see the velociraptors they look somewhat like, ehm, men in rubber suits, waddling around rather in rather ungainly fashion. As for the T-Rex, well lets just say that it makes Godzilla look graceful. No computer generated effects here. This is strictly 'model' based stuff. But the creatures are feisty and give the audience what they want. They are ably supported by the even more wooden marines, especially Scott Valentine as Colonel Rance, who obviously takes his role with a good degree of seriousness. The dialogue too is suitably awful… 'Looks like something out of Friday the 13th Part 2… You saying that these creatures are getting smarter? Yes, they are making exceptional gains', says the driven research scientist in charge of the project. The cover claims that Primal Species is Aliens and Jurassic Park put in a blender. They forgot to add Titanic. There is a simmering romance between Valentine's tough colonel and Gunn's equally tough scientist.

On the negative side there is far too much joking and cheap 'bonding' between the marines. We want to see the dinos in action not third-rate comedy. Nevertheless, on the whole, an admirable effort worth every penny of the £5.99 I paid for the DVD. Also a telling insight into the secret of the success of the US Special Forces - they are obviously deploying raptors in Afghanistan.
