The catch phrase for The Bat - "When it flies someone dies' was enough to lure me into watching this Vincent Price starrer and it didn't disappoint.
Adapted from a stage mystery and novel by Mary Roberts Rhinehart the film is directed by Crane Wilbur who had earlier directed Price in another classic - The House of Wax. The Bat in fact continues to feel and run very much like a play and this adds to its old world charm. The plot revolves around a notorious criminal known as "The Bat" - for his eerie black costume, sharp claws, faceless mask and his penchant for ripping people throats open. The Bat - amongst others - is in search of a hidden stash of money. In the midst of these events walks in renowned mystery novel writer played magnificently by Agnes Moorhead. Moorhead's character, along with her companion, occupies an old mansion, which appears to be the site for the hidden treasure. Vincent Price plays the local doctor - but is he actually the maniacal "Bat" in disguise. Time begins to run short as the Bat picks of his victims one by one. Only our mystery novel writer can solve the case but will she be too late? Watch the Bat to find out. The Bat is wonderful entertainment. There's a little of everything in it - lots of mystery, twists and red herrings - the suspects just keep mounting. The performances are spot on and while Price is as suave and mysterious as ever its Moorhead who steals the show with a witty and energetic performance. If you're looking for a light hearted, Scooby Doo style whodunit look no further. But be warned - "when it flies…someone dies!'
