Unsettling, typically weird early Cronenberg film starring Samantha Eggar and Oliver Reed. Effective and scary as all early Cronenberg invariably was. Makes a fine trilogy along with Shivers and Rabid. This time the dark events surround the experiments of a sinister Dr. who runs an "Institute of Psychoplasmics" from where apparently weird mutated "old" children wreck murderous havoc, but it seems that they are acting on the impulse of Eggar who is the doctors bitter and estranged wife with a theory of family planning and the nuclear family all of her own. Fascinating horror film, leaps and bounds above the usual fare. This is a twisted analysis on the deterioration of the family with sufficient horror and tension for those looking for satisfaction on a surface level. Yet another fascinating, intelligent look at the very real phenomenon of the erosion of the family unit in western societies.
