Thoroughly amusing creature feature is fuelled by a diabolical performance by Jon Voight as a shifty Paraguayan bounty hunter. Will be remembered however for the utterly unconvincing CGI and animatronic reptiles and for the outlandish, crowd-pleasing death sequences. A cracking good bad movie, if you know what we mean! Things get started with the obligatory attack scene in the opening few minutes of the film with poor old Juan 23 the rapist from Con Air being attacked by a stalking camera which is supposed to be the point of view of the initially unseen killer snake. Then we are introduced to a most unlikley bunch of anthropoligists who are off on a cruise down the amazon in search of a lost tribe known as the Shrisharmas. Among the anthropologists is a scantily clad Jennifer Lopez and a ditzy blonde who you know is going to end up becoming a Scooby snack for the dreaded Anaconda. We have a moronic rapping Ice Cube and an even more moronic Hollywoodised Englishmen to deliver the typically droll one liners. The movie is about as basic as can be and is clearly designed for an intellectually undemanding audience - which is fine as at least refuses to take itself seriously even for a moment which is probably the key to its success and dubious charm. |
