South superstar makes his debut in this frothy but vacuous and unconvincing love story. The potential was there to make this into a soft romantic fairytale, something that Mahesh Bhatt could have executed well but in the hands of Gautham Menon, this effort simply passes muster and nothing more. The biggest flaw is that it lacks one main ingredient that of genuine charm. Maddy (Mahadevan) and Sam (Saif) are sworn enemies at College. Both walk around with their respective cronies and Maddy is nothing but a layabout and sadak chhap. After a few run ins, Sam leaves college to go off to make his future in America. Three years later, we see Maddy in Mumbai, now a mechanical engineer, teaching a class and working for a firm. Doing well, he turns down the chance to go to san Francisco for a year because he does not want to leave his father (Anupam Kher). One dark rainy night, Maddy sees a girl (Diya Mirza) dancing with little children. This is déjà vu for me because it is so reminiscent of a scene with Aishwarya Rai, possibly in Hamara dil aapke paas hai but I could be wrong here. Anyways, our dear Maddy falls in love instantly with this lady in blue and now starts his pursuit of her. One episode after the other results in him discovering that she, Reena, is engaged to Rajiv from America who is coming in a weeks time to see her. Determined to fight for the love of his life, he pretends to be Rajiv and the lady is immediately wooed by this rather plump, uncultured and anything but an American returned gent. Of course, Reena in a period of five days, falls madly in love with the pretender and we have three songs thrust upon us in fairly quick succession because the director cannot come up with a script good enough to take the romance further. Just as Maddy is going to admit that he is simply a pretender, Reena's real fiancé Rajiv arrives in town and could there have been any doubt as to who this Rajiv is..yes, its Maddy's old rival Sam whose name is actually Rajiv Samra. Rejected by Reena for being a lying and deceitful mawali, Maddy goes into a spin as to what he should do to win his girl back. In fact he tries everything which should really have repelled the girl further as he descends to his mawaali roots and seems to do little else but move around with his group of cronies, intent on violence. So much for being a mechanical engineer, the job seems to take a back seat whilst the two boys line up for yet another rerun of their college days run ins! Who will get the girl is what is supposed to be the question but was anyone really in any doubt as to what the conclusion would be? I doubt it. Mahadevan in his
first role manages a certain freshness but is let down by a pathetic
script. The scenes featuring the lead pair are dull, without any charm
or any novelty whatsoever. Songs are added for no reason simply to
provide relief in the MTV execution but they simply add to the tedium.
Mahadevan also needs to tone up. Diya Mirza looks nice but does not
immediately have a commanding presence..and has a pretty poor dialogue
delivery. Saif has a fairly small role in the film but shows how much
he has improved as a actor. He really has come leaps and bounds from
when he started out and infuses the film with a few sparks when he
is on screen although I really wish that he would try not to go the
Salman Khan way, bare torso walking down a main street. Still, I guess
those are the dictates of the director trying to cash in on his new
physique. The music of the film is OK although apart from the title
song, I cannot seem to recall any other song remaining in memory.
Oh dear. All in all, quite a let down. |
