Sunny Deol romps back to town with this all action "topical" film on terrorism, corruption and the stuff that has been seen zillions of times before with the famous Deol fist very much in evidence throughout the film. The closest that commercial cinema has come to making a decent and gripping saga on terrorism was with Sarfarosh and Indian falls well below the standard achieved by that film. In fact, Indian is a mishmash of the usual fare, fairly slickly executed but quite unimpressive as a whole.

Waseem Khan (Mukesh Rishi), the head of some Lashkar or the other swears to destroy India on the snowy slopes of some border area. The captured Indian soldiers naturally stand up for the mother land and pay for it by having their throats slashed. Waseem Khan now intends to infiltrate India, as face to face combat has always resulted in catastrophe and plans to destroy India from within. So we end up in Mumbai where a twin Waseem Khan is also used. The twin is arrested and Waseem khan makes off in his car only to find his twin standing in his way. Boom boom, and we have our DCP Azad (Sunny Deol) appear from behind the twin, obviously the cop with brains who has seen that the twin is simply a decoy and that the real Waseem Khan is on the loose. The following car chase finally sees Waseem Khan captured and incarcerated. DCP Azad is put in charge of his case and requests that Waseem Khan be moved to separate cell which turns out to be a rather palatial unit which only houses this loathsome terrorist.

Oops, in all his running around, he forgets that his wife (Shilpa Shetty) is at the jewellers and has been waiting for him since 9pm. Its now 12 and naturally the lady throws a fit. Obviously, the lure of jewels was such that she refused to give up and remained rooted to her chair there until her hapless husband arrived. Wifey throws a fit and even manages to break a window which does not really bode well for those who believe that the police are there to prevent criminal damage. After the usual pathetic banter, Wifey changes into tight jeans and ends up on the road with hubby crooning "thhat nawabi" to her with cronies in tow. Fortunately, wifey then disappaears for the next hour when DCP Azad has to get down to business.

One dark night, he is summoned by who turns out to be the DGP (Raj Babbar) who informs him that he has to let Waseem Khan go because he is an international figure and there could be an international incident if we hold on to him for too long. It transpires that our DGP is corrupt to the extreme and is mixed up with Waseem Khan and others who are out to destabilise India. Azad simply pumps him with bullets, seen by his four cronies, aspiring policeman who have not managed to make the grade because they do not have the right connections. So revered is he by these four cronies that even the cold blooded murder of this corrupt man is seen as an act of heroism and not anything else. Azad instructs them to dispose of the body!

Oh dear, problems are now compounded because wifey has a turn. Yes, the DGP was her loving Papa and she obviously wants the murderer caught. Enter CBI Inspector (Om Puri) who is on the scent of the murderer, eventually discovers the truth and also destroys the evidence because obviously the executioner was doing the right thing by ridding people of such a corrupt deshdrohi.

The mystery of who is behind this nefarious plot to destroy India takes a turn with the entry of Singhania (Danny Denzongpa). I simply canot recall what Singhania's motives are for this desire for the destruction of India but he is the driving force and one imagines that it is all do with dollars and nothing much else. So now starts a tit for tat war between Azad and Singhania. All rather predictable really with a small does of over pitched drama thrown in as wifey discovers that her husband is her father's killer and throws him out of the house only to be slapped by her mother later, duly informing her as to what kind of man her father really was.

Indian is really just another fisticuffs showcase for Sunny Deol and a film that his fans will love. But there is nothing more to it and all the loud dialogues and te action are meant for the front benchers and not anyone else. In fact, the film loses steam, if ever it had any with the introduction of Danny in the proceedings and we simply wait for the finale when everyone knows that good is going to triumph over evil.

Sunny Deol is loud and makes little impression. Shilpa Shetty has a small role mercifully with little to do. Raj Babbar is wasted and Danny is really not in good form. Music makes no impression at all with songs stuck in at the oddest of moments. Director Mahajan has made a reasonably slick film taking it a cut above the usual marr dhaar film but its nothing more than that.
