It defies logic that a film like this should be attempted in this day and age, a film which has nothing to say, no redeeming factors and a totally regressive plot. Its all dressed up like a typical Govinda comedy but where are the laughs? Actually, to be fair, it had me in fits albeit totally unintentionally. Sometimes, a product is so unbelievably awful that you can actually enjoy its mediocrity.

This one falls into the category of Govinda family comedy. Durga Devi (Aruna Irani) has three sons, Govinda, Ashok Saraf and Laxmikant Berde. The latter two are married and have so far only produced girls, much to their mother's disgust. Laxmikant Berde's wife has been sent off to her father's because of having produced another girl and the only light at the end of the tunnel is that Ashok Saraf's wife is pregnant and they are hoping for a boy. Why should the sex of the child be relevant. Oh because Durga Devi will bequeath all her wealth to the child that carries the name of the family ahead. Hence, this mad scramble to procreate as fast as possible in the hope that the family riches will come their way.

As fate would have it, Saraf's wife produces yet another girl and she and the child are shunned. In the meantime, the youngest son Govinda starts to romance the elephantine Rambha, a girl of poor stock but ample girth. She works in a "telephone booth". Love blossoms but of course, mother dearest will not accept a girl with nothing to offer. So, with the help of his father (Prem Chopra), two lakhs by way of dowry are provided and the two are married off. They live in blissful harmony until Durga Devi discovers the deception and lashes out at her weak husband and son. This takes shape in her sacking the maid and now the nai dulhan assumes the role of the naukrani. How will she ever redeem herself?

Luck is in store as she falls pregnant and Durga Devi's father foretells that this child will bring great happiness in the family. This is taken by all to mean that Rambha is carrying a boy, as carrying a girl cannot possibly mean that there would be any happiness in the family!!! So Durga Devi now changes tack and is all sugar and spice to her favoured bahu who will provide her with the requisite heir. However, on a visit to the doctor, Govinda and Rambha are informed that they are about to have a girl. Quelle horreur. Now, all the good will be lost let alone all the wealth. But they play along with the story that she is having a boy. At the time of delivery, his friend Johnny Lever's wife is also having a baby. Both wives go into labour together. The following is a shortened version of events. Durga Devi collapses and ends up in the same hospital. Father (Prem Chopra) sees Govinda holding Johny Lever's son in his arms, mistakes him for his grandson and runs with child to revive the ailing Durga Devi. Three days later, Durga Devi wants to take her grandson home…but what of poor Johnny Lever and wife, left with a "girl" which is not their own. Well, they are persuaded to move into close proximity and there follows a series of one mother running from one room to another soothing their respective child, keeping them with them during the night and then returning them to continue with the subterfuge in the morning.

The story goes on and on until the cliched realisation by Durga Devi that she made a mistake. One cannot even take offence to the utterly regressive nature of the film and what it stands for because it is not made with even one iota of intelligence. Even the end doesn't produce any message that would vindicate "betis" who are the subject of a totally pathetic and mindless piece of filmmaking. Of course, the actual climax comes with the feckless hubby raising a hand to his domineering wife, only to be applauded by his father in law with the words to the effect that it is only now that he has become a man. Pardon me for wanting to vomit.

There is little that one can say about the cast. Its is sad that Govinda is wasted in roles like this. This is a film which looks very dated and has possibly been making for a long time. The less said about any of the others, the better. It has a couple of hummable songs but not any that will leave any lasting impression on you. T Rama Rao has made many stinkers in the past, all so forgettable that none come to mind immediately. This one can be another to add to his list.
