THE NATIONAL & NIGAR AWARDS - 2001 JUNE 2001
JUNE 2001
...brought to you every month by OAK

The National Awards (Nafdec) were announced in Lahore recently at a fairly lavish ceremony at a top hotel. The Awards (listed below) were largely swept away by Tere Pyar Mein but the occasion will be mostly remembered by the moment when a very frail and unwell looking Shamim Ara barely made it up to the stage to receive her lifetime achievement award. The lady has been through a string of broken marriages and recently her career has fallen away very badly and to compound things further, she suffered a debilitating stroke that has left her in a very fragile condition. Zeba and Mohammad Ali were visibly moved to see their co-star of yesteryear in such a miserable condition.

There were other moments that will be remembered, such as Reema's pointed remarks at not being nominated and her alluring dance number. Syed Noor's gesture of handing over his best directors award to Hasan Askari was considered rather magnanimous as was Shaan's gesture of handing over his award prizemoney to a cameraman. On the whole, the occasion was well organized and though it dragged on endlessly, it ought to be considered a success.

The increasingly controversial and enormously maligned Nigar Awards were also announced recently and the results for this year have done nothing to reduce the vehement cries of detractors. The Nigar's, it has to be accepted, have lost a lot of credibility of late and have been gradually eclipsed by the National Awards. The most stinging criticism has been aimed at the ludicrous award for the years best actress to Zara Shaikh who though pretty as a picture in Tere Pyar Mein, really hadn't a clue as far as acting is concerned. Yet she is this years recipient for best actress. However, when you are up against the likes of Reema for Billo 420 then its no wonder that Zara got the nod.
